Intro
- Athlete Information Sheet (AIS), fill in the top section
- Full Name, Sport, Birthday, Age, Date
- Use Ipad to scan the QR code for the survey
Bodpod
- Rules and info:
- Door must be closed
- Calibrate the bodpod with door closed
- Athlete must have tight clothing, spare in the metal cabinet near the door
- Medium - long hair needs to be covered with hair net, more than 1 hair net if necessary
- No eating within 2 hours, no vigorous exercise within 14 - 24 hours
- The Bodpod needs to be opened an hour before the test to sample the room air
- Do not slam or let go of the bodpod door while closing it, so it doesn’t put too much stress on the hydraulic system
- Instructions:
- Make sure the bodpod is calibrated, if not, perform calibration by following the instructions on the screen (with door closed)
- Use weight scale at 211B to measure athlete’s height in cm
- Record it on the athlete information sheet
- Athlete change into tights, both top (or topless for men) and bottom
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Record BF%, FFM (lbs + kg), and weight (lbs + kg) on AIS
Warm up
- Rules and info:
- Monitor the jog, sometimes athlete is overly relaxed.
- Instructions:
- Treadmill jog at athlete’s desired speed
- All dynamic stretches are one lap (from the start to the pulldown machine) except the last 2 exercises, lateral shift and carioca (back and forth)
- After all warm-ups are done, check off dynamic warm up on AIS
Vertical Jump Test
-
Rules and info:
- Make sure the force plate is calibrated (usually done by the professor)
- Don’t let the athlete step on the force plate before jump
- When Athlete is on the jumping mat, he/she needs to be facing towards the direction of the brand label on the mat (or their shoes should be pointing towards the brand label)
- Turn the wired device for the jumping mat OFF after every use.
- 30 seconds of rest between each jump
- Make sure the athlete’s jumping position is correct. While in the air, the body should maintain a vertical position, not bend from the hip. Below is an overly exaggerated representation of the incorrect jump:
- Athlete should perform 2 types of jumps (hand on hip and arm swing), 2 jumps for each type.
- If the data between the 2 jumps varies too much, do a 3rd jump
-
Instruction for Force Plate
- Open tablet, pw 0266
- Open ________ app if it’s not already open
- Add new subject
- Screenshot here
- Click test on the bottom
- Screenshot here
- Inform athlete regarding what to do and what to expect (wait for the beep, then jump), and how to perform the jump (explosive up, quick down)
- Click play button to start
- After athlete jumped, wait for the system to finish recording
- Let the athlete step off the force plate, then wait 30 seconds
- While waiting, record jump height in meters
- Rinse and repeat after 30 seconds
-
Instruction for Jumping Matt
- Athlete steps on the mat facing towards the direction of the mat’s brand name
- Turn the wired controller device on (button on the side)
- Immediately, the LED screen will display the first option, “jump 1 time”, Click on the red button before it displays the next option
- If the next option appears before you can click the red button. Turn the device off and on to start over, no need to waste time to waiting for the correct option.
- Athlete can jump whenever he/she is ready
- After jump, device’s screen will display 2 numbers, the height of the jump in both meters and inches, record the inches
VO2max Testing
- Rules and info:
- The metabolic cart/system should be turned on an hour before the test
- The laptop should be opened an hour before the test
- Words of encouragement should be called out for the purpose of the athlete’s motivation
- Don’t let the participant run too close to the treadmill console, as he/she might hit the emergency stop button by accident
- Grade should be set to 2.0
- Women initial speed is 4.0 mph
- Men initial speed is 4.9 mph
- RPE scale every 1:30 minutes after speed increase
- Increase speed every 2:00 minutes
- DO NOT take the participant’s face mask off before the assessor stops (and saves) the test.
- The participant’s last RPE value should be at least 17 - 18.
- Instruction for testing:
- Explain RPE scale to the participant
- Put the heart rate monitor on athlete, make sure it’s not going anywhere.
- Put the face mask on athlete, make sure it sits snugly with no gaps
- Cover the ventilation hole, ask participant to breathe out, and make sure there’s no air escaping
- Connect the inspiratory valve to the face mask
- Explain what participant should do when he/she can no longer run anymore.
- Tester starts the test by clicking on the “start” button, followed by the “Rec” button. Wait until ALL the data on the right panel populates, this is when the test starts at the initial values,
- Screenshot here
- Click on “Phases”, then follow by “Exercise”
- obtain RPE value every 1:30 minutes after every speed increase, increase speed every 2 minutes
- Tester by the laptop should enter the RPE value by clicking on the “marker” button on the top of the graph.
- Screenshot here
- Tester by the laptop should monitor all the data to make sure it everything is going as planned.
- Do not forget words of encouragement, motivational sentences.
- When the participant signals that he/she cannot run any further, stop the test by clicking on the “Stop” button, A dark gray panel will appear on the right side asking whether or not to save the data, Click “Yes”
- Screenshot here
- Ask for the last RPE value if the participant did not reach his/her true limit
- Ask participant to cool down on the treadmill.
- Input data
- Screenshot here
- Remove the inspiratory valve for cleaning, and install the new one
- Screenshot of the correct position of the valve.
- How to Setup the test:
- Bluetooth pairing

- Calibration
- Flow Meter
- Connect the inspiratory valve to the 3-Liter syringe
- At the home page, click on “calibration” → “Flow Meter”
- The System will start loading and display the message “Start performing strokes with the syringe”
- This is when you start doing FULL strokes on the syringe, all the way in, all the way out, not too fast, not too slow.
- Continue the stroke until the screen says “Calibration Passed”
- If the error % is more than 5%, calibrate it one more time.
- CO2 Scrubber
- At the home page, click on “calibration” → “Scrubber”
- TheSystem will start loading and display the message “Connect sampling line to the scrubber”
- Do as the screen says
- Photo of the sampling line and scrubber here
- Disconnect the sampling line until the screen says “calibration passed”
- Store the scrubber back in the container right away.
- Metabolic Cylinder
- At the home page, click on “Calibration” → “Reference Gas” → “BxB”
- The System will start loading and display message “Calibration in progress pressure compensation”
- Followed by the message “Calibration in progress adjusting CO2 Zero”
- Then it will display “Connect sampling line to Gas regulator outlet”
- This is when you connect the sampling line into the cylinder, and then open both valves.
- Wait until the screen says “calibration passed”, close both valves, and disconnect the sampling line
- Flow Meter
- Bluetooth pairing
